Samsung Display accelerates its penetration into the premium LCD market with 'Curved'

Samsung Display announced on 9th that it held the '2nd Curved Forum' at the Beijing Yanqi Lake International Convention Center on 8th. A total of 200 people attended the event including TV manufacturers such as Samsung Electronics, TCL, Hisense, Xiaomi, Haier, Changhong, Konka, and LeEco, as well as monitor makers such as AOC and HKC. In addition, several government agencies such as Ministry of Industry and Information Technology , Electronic Chamber of Commerce, and Video Industry Association attended the Curved Forum.

The 'Curved Forum', which is the second following last year, was held to expand the base of the curved TV & monitor market and strengthen the ties of the companies and institutions they belonged to by analyzing the latest curved LCD technology trends and sharing product strategy with each maker. This year, in order to emphasize the excellence of curved LCD, filmmakers and interior designers participated as speakers.

"Samsung Display has formed a strong curved alliance with manufacturers based on the unique quality and innovative design value of curved LCD in China, the world's largest TV market," said Han Kap-su, vice president of LCD business at Samsung Display. We will continue to invest in curved LCDs and develop the technology, "he said.

Samsung Display cites Curved LCD as a key technology to break through the slow-growing large-sized market. Especially, in China, which is the world's largest premium market, it is focusing on strengthening cooperation with the first and second-tier TV companies such as TCL and Hisense to raise the curved market.

According to CMM, a Chinese market research agency, the number of brands and products adopting curved LCD is growing rapidly. As of May, 289 curved models have been launched from 33 brands around the world, and the market growth has nearly doubled over the past year.

In terms of sales by product, Curved TV has grown at a CAGR of 300% since its launch in 2014, and it is expected to reach 4 million units in China alone this year. Especially, the penetration rate in the large-sized market over 48 inches is 23% based on sales, and it is evaluated as stable in the premium TV market.

Curved monitors are showing a faster growth trend. In particular, in conjunction with the special market conditions of China, including 700 million game users and the replacement of monitors, the curved monitor is expected to record more than 7.5 million global sales this year.
